WTA Finals 2017: Draw for the doubles

24/10/2017 – Timi and Andrea Hlaváčková will face Andreja Klepač and María José Martínez Sánchez.

On Tuesday afternoon the draw was made for the doubles at the 7 000 000 USD WTA Finals in Singapore: Timi and Andrea Hlaváčková will face Andreja Klepač and María José Martínez Sánchez in the QF. The Hungarian-Czech pair was seeded 3rd at the season-ending event.

“The draw was very well organized and super event. Before the ceremony We attended a great food tasting. Everything went well, it was superb. The draw was made and We got one of the most dangerous and toughest opponents from the possible four opponents. Klepač and Martínez Sánchez form a great and dangerous team. This is My last tournament in the 2017 season, I want to play very well and I want to enjoy the whole event. This is the most important. I will do everything in the preparation and then in the quarter-final” – said Timi.

There are two teams, which must miss the eight pair field, due to compelling reasons. Last year’s Singapore finalists, five time Grand Slam Champs, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Šafářová could not play because the US-player suffered a dangerous knee injury at Wimbledon. On 10 October, Lucie Hradecká announced that she would not be able to enter the field with Kateřina Siniaková, also because of a knee problem.

The most important honorary guest of the Singapore draw ceremony was Martina Navratilova.

The 24-year old Hungarian player is 12th, while her Czech partner is 6th in the latest world rankings.

Klepač (born: 13 March, 1986), is 23rd in the world ranking, the best of her career. So far she has won 5 WTA and 13 ITF events in this genre. This season, the Slovenian player remained unbeaten in Tokyo (Japan, 1 000 000 USD, hard court), played in the semifinal in Sydney (Australia, 776 000 USD, hard court) and Nuremberg (Germany, 250 000 USD, clay). At the Australian Open, at the Roland Garros and in Wimbledon she got the Round 3, while she reached the QF at the US Open. Every time Martínez Sánchez was her companion.

Martínez Sánchez (born: 12 August, 1982), is also 23rd in the world rankings, with a career best position of 4th (5 July, 2010). She has so far won 18 WTA and 22 ITFs in doubles. The Spanish player was semifinalist in 2010 and 2012, and at the US Open in 2012. In the 2009 season she won the WTA Finals with Nuria Llagostera Vives.

This will the Hungarian player’s third appearance at the WTA Finals: in 2015 she finished with one victory and two defeats with Kristina Mladenovic, while in 2016 she lost in the QF with Yaroslava Shvedova (Kazakhstan). This year’s format will be the same, as in the last season.

Timi and Andrea Hlaváčková had six finals this year at the WTA Tour. The Hungarian-Czech pair remained unbeaten in Rabat, Quebec City, Tashkent (all WTA International tournaments) and Moscow (Premier), while in Madrid and Beijing (both Premier Mandatory) lost their finals. In January, the Hungarian player triumphed in Sydney with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Russia). The Czech player won in Shenzhen with Shuai Peng (China) and they also reached the final at the Australian Open and in Dubai. Timi and Andrea Hlaváčková were quarter-finalists at the last Grand Slam event of 2017, at the US Open.

In Cincinnati this season, the Hungarian-Czech pair won 2:6, 7:6, 10-7 against the Slovenian-Spanish team.
