US Open 2018: a dramatic match and defeat in the final

09/09/2018 – The Australian-American pair saved a total of three match points in the second and third set.

The match lasted 2 hours 36 minutes in New York.


“It is not easy to make a statement right after the final … I think it was a fantastic match in which We had a lot of chances. I’m sorry, We could not lived with them! In the second set I was overwhelming the end, though I was playing very well. We had many opportunities in the second set, but We did not succeed. In the decisive set they led, We came back from 0:3, that’s positive. Of course, I’m terribly sorry for the tie-break, the last couple of points are not went the way we wanted it. It was a very close match, Timi and Kiki Mladenovic was very close to a fantastic success, they were times one point from the trophy.


In the 35-minute opening act, Timi and Kristina Mladenovic served much better than their opponents. Although, they immediately lost the first break advantage, but after 2:3, they won four games in a row.

Then at 5:4 came a big chance! Timi and Mladenovic had two championship points, but unfortunately, they could finished the final. Soon the tie-break came, in which Barty and Vandeweghe played better.


Winning the second set game an impetus for the Australian-American pair. After 1:0, Barty and Vandeweghe broke Timi after 40-15, then led 3:0. But in the fifth game, Vandeweghe could not hold her own game, and sonn the result was 3:3.


Then at 4:5 Timi saved two match points behind her serve, and sonn came the next tie-break. The second seeds came back from 0-2 to 5-3. Unfortunately, Timi had a double fault, then Barty had a fantastic volley (5-5). The next point was won by Mladenovic, but unfortunately, Barty and Vandeweghe won three rallies in a row. The final was decided by the French player’s double fault.
