US Open 2017: victory in singles

29/08/2017 – Timi came back from 2:4 in the final set.

Tímea Babos (Hungarian)-Viktorija Golubic (Swiss) 7:5, 5:7, 7:5

The match lasted 2 hours 35 minutes in New York.

“My word is gone, it was a very big game. Finally, it is a struggling and difficult match that eventually turned to My side! I’m really very, very happy. I do not really want to go into the details of the match. It’s just the most important is the victoryI was physically fit, I fought hardly for the success. I’m really very, very happy” – said Timi.

A new match was added to the list of Timi’s memorable Grand Slam matches. The 24-year old Hungarian player was the favourite before the start, but it seemed in the final set, that Golubic will be the winner. But it was not like that.

Timi started well in the 56-minute first set, she broke Golubic after 2:1. The Hungarian player lived with the fifth chance. Which means that she had fought a lot. The advantage, unfortunately, did not last long, Golubic lost only two rallies in the seventh game.

Fortunately, at the end of the set, Timi was again the most accurate, after 6:5 she broke the Swiss player to 15.

The 47-minute second act was even more intricate. Both players fought well, barely gave a chance for the receiver. In the fourth game Timi had a break point, but she could not live with the chance. Later this proved to be decisive … After 5:5, Golubic broke her opponent to 30, then hold her own service game to 15.

The decisive set was extremely exciting and wacky. Timi lost her opening service game to 0, then could not stop her opponent as a receiver. Golubic kept her lead till 4:2, and then came to big change.

In the seventh game Timi fought for her “life”, and with success. The Hungarian player saved a total of three break points, which was crucial. This brought the hopeful turn. Timi broke Golubic to 30, then won her own service game to 15 (5:4).

Golubic has even leveled, but then the Hungarian player was the better. Timi hold her serve to 30, then put a big pressure on her opponent. And Golubic could not hold the Hungarian player. In the final game the Swiss youngster led 30-15, but Timi won the next three points. She lived with her first match point.

Timi’s next opponent will be Maria Sharapova.

The Russian star (born: 30 April, 1987) is 146th in the world rankings, and her career best position was 1st (first time: 22 August 2005). Sharapova has so far won 35 WTA and 4 ITF tournaments.
