US Open 2017: Sarapova won in three sets

31/08/2017 – Until the final set the match was very tight.

Maria Sharapova (Russian)-Tímea Babos (Hungarian) 6:7 (4-7), 6:4, 6:1

The match lasted 2 hours 21 minutes in New York.

“I think it was a very good and tough match. It is certain that Maria is a very good player, who is still in great shape. I played a very good game, I can enjoy this performance. From the second set I became a little bit more passive, but Maria also started playing very well, making good decisions in the biggest points. Whatever happened with her in the past: Maria is a great champion! She’s playing very well now too! However, this game is also positive for Me, and I’m happy to be back at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. I can not say that My draw was good, because maybe there was a player in the second round that I could defeat with such a tennis. But that’s tennis. In the last six months, I did not play well, but I’ve been on the right track since Wimbledon. In these events you have to be seeded, maybe you can get a better draw. In any case, I really enjoyed the game, it was a great experience to play here again. Now, I’m waiting for the women’s doubles and the mixed doubles” – said Timi.

For a long time the match was very tight, Timi often surprised the 5-time Grand Slam Champ. Sharapova was extremely confident and good at the end, but the Hungarian player has often won the recognition of the Arthus Ashe Stadium.

In the 61-minute first set Timi led all the way, three times with a break. The Hungarian player fought well and used Sarapova’s mistakes well. However, the serves of the Hungarian player did not always work well, so the Russian star has always come back. Timi broke again at 5:4 and 6:5, but Sharapova broke back to 30 and 15.

The tie-break have been a pleasant surprise! Timi was well received, and she won three serves by Sharapova. Unfortunately, the Russian star was twice came back, but after 4-2 the situation had changed. Timi played well behind the serves and she closed the set after 5-4 with two confident points.

Unfortunately, at the beginning of the 52-minute second act Sharapova played much more accurately. The Russian player in the first two games lost only a single rally. But Timi then found himself, and in the fourth game she won her opponent’s serve. Indeed, after 3: 2, the Hungarian player had two break points. Sharapova, however, did well at both occasions and then won the crucial game.

Unfortunately, after 3: 3, Timi had mistakes, which proved to be fatal. After 15-40, the Hungarian player has equalized, but eventually she lost her service game. After that she had no chance as a receiver, until the end of the match. Sharapova won her serve to 15, then to 0 after 5:4.

With the equalizer, the Russian player gained momentum and confidence that she did not give a chance to her opponent in the final set. Timi tried everything but could not keep the speed and rhythm of Sarapova. The Russian player broke three times (to 0, 40, and 30), then celebrated with a breakout after the winner.
