US Open 2017: defeat in WD

07/09/2017 – The Indian-Chinese pair came back from a break down in the opening act and won the second set in a big battle.


Sania Mirza, Shuai Peng (Indian, Chinese, 4)-Tímea Babos, Andrea Hlaváčková (Hungarian, Czech, 5) 7:6 (7-5), 6:4


The match lasted 1 hour 59 minutes in New York.


“We had chances in our quarter-final: Andrea served for the first set. But unfortunately, we did not succeed … Maybe she did not do it well in that game and We made tactical mistakes. It was such a big match today, and We did not succeed. I’m annoying a bit for this, but overall I’m glad I’m playing better. This is the most important. Next time I’m in Quebec City, in singles, so after today’s match I went to train with Thomas. And Andrea is coming to the tournament so we’ll be playing doubles again. This is the case now” – said Timi.


On Wednesday the match was interrupted by the rain at 2:2, and on Thursday the quarter-final was very close.


In the 67-minute first set Mirza and Peng saved two break point in opening game, then Timi and Hlaváčková saved one breakpoint in the fourt game, on Wednesday. Then, on Thursday both team played well behind the serves, until 5:5. After that, the Hungarian-Czech pair won the opponent’s serve to 30, and led 30-15. Unfortunately Mirza and Peng turned that game, so the tie-break decided the fate of the set.


Timi and her Czech partner twice came back from a break, to 4-4. But at 4-5 they lost their serve again, and they could not saved the important first set.


The second set did not start and did not continue well for Timi and Hlaváčková. After 2:2, the Hungarian-Czech lost their serve from 40-30, then lost the next service game, also (2:5). It seemed that everything was decided, but came the most exciting part of the QF.


Timi and Hlaváčková won the opponent’s serve, saving a match point. Then came an amazing game. Mirza and Peng had another 6 match point, but the opponent came back every time with a brave tennis. At the end, Timi hold her service game, keppeng alive their chance.


The last game was extremely tight, but unfortunately the Indian-Chinese double finished the match by saving a break point. So they advanced to the quarter-final.


Timi finshed the US Open with the best results in 2017 in a Grand Slam event. She reached the second round in singles and played in the QF in women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
