US Open 2014: close match with the Williams sisters

29/08/2014 – The 13-time Grand Slam winner, three-time Olympic champion Serena Williams won a very close battle against Timi and Kristina Mladenovic in the opening round.

The match lasted 2 hours 35 minutes.

In the 54-minute first set, the legendary American pair started better. In the second game they lived with the third chance, and broke the rival to 40. But Timi and her French partner “came back” and won the rival’s serve to 30.

 

Serena and Venus Williams then had a break advantage again, but then the Wimbledon finalist Hungarian-French pair won another game as receiver.

 

In the ninth game Timi and Mladenovic broke to 40, so at 5:4 they served for the set. But after 30-0 the American stars won the game to 40, then came to games for the servers.

 

Came the tie-break, which was one-sided. Serena and Venus Williams didn’t lost a rally, they smoothly won the set.

 

At the beginning of the second set, both pair saved a break point, the match was great. Timi and Mladenovic fought with great spirit, the legendary opponent didn’t had an easy life.

 

In the eight game Serena and Venus Williams saved three break point after 0-40, then another at 5:4.

 

So few minutes later came the second tie-break. The American pair had a 4-2 lead, but after that Timi and Mladenovic won five rallies in a row. The 7th seeds equalized!

 

At the beginning of the third set Serena and Venus Williams saved a break point at 1:1, and that was the last turning point. Timi and Mladenovic fought very bravely, but they lost the energy. The Americans broke twice, and they advanced to the second round.

 

The 21-year old Hungarian youngster will play in mixed doubles with Eric Butorac. They will meet last year’s finalist, Abigail Spears and Santiago Gonzalez in the first round at the US Open.
