Toronto: close match and defeat in the qualies

04/08/2019 – The Top50 opponent won the opening set with a break, then celebrated in the second act after a tie-break.

Ekaterina Alexandrova (Russian, 5)-Tímea Babos (Hungarian) 7:5, 7:6 (7-5)


The match lasted 1 hour and 43 minutes.


In the 52-minute first set, the Hungarian player won the World No47 opponent’s serve after 2:1, then equalized from 0-40. Unfortunately, he failed to save the serv, and then the seventh game was won by the 5th seeded Russian player to 15.


But Timi didn’t give up! She came back from three set and break point to 4:5, then broke the opponent to 40, it was 5:5. Unfortunately, Alexandrova was more accurate in the next two games. The Russian player broke to 30, then hold her own game to 40.


In the second act, Alexanadrova broke to 30 after 1:1, then led to 5:3 by saving a a total of three breakballs (at 3:2 from 30-40, at 4:3 from 15-40). Timi broke to 30 after 4:5 and then led to 6:5. The Russian player then brought her serve after 30-30, so came the tie-break.


Alexandrova converted the score from 2-2 to 5-2, and at 6-4 came the match point. This was cleared by Timi as a receiver, but unfortunately she lost her serve, including the match.


The Hungarian player will play in doubles in Toronto, but not with Kristina Mladenovic. The French player will play in the qualifier in Cincinnati at the end of next week, so she has canceled her Canadian doubles tournament. This time Timi’s partner will be Anett Kontaveit from Estonia, meeting the 8th seeded Hradecká and Andreja Klepac in Round 1.
