10/09/2014 – The 8th seed Timea Babos won in three sets against Romina Oprandi in the first round of the 250 000 USD WTA tournament in Quebec.
The meeting lasted one hour 37 minutes. The Hungarian player’s next opponent will be Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

“I’m very happy with today’s victory! It was a very difficult match, a lot of turns. The opponent started poorly, and then she improved, she became more and more stable, she became more and more better. In the final set i Came back from break down twice, I’m glad with it! Wednesday is a free day for Me, with a little tennis and gym, then Lucic on Thursday. It will not be an easy match, she played very well at the US Open, and she won easily her first match in Quebec. In the 23-minute first set Timi served and received very well, she broke her rival first time at 1:0, she lived with the third chance after 15-40. Then she had a 3:0 lead, and won again Oprandi’s service game at 4:1. In the last game of the opening set the young Hungarian lost only two rallies.
In the 32-minute second set Oprandi take much more attention to the serves, she didn’t let a single break chance for the rival. Timi also served well until 4:3, when she the game after 40-15. The Swiss palyer then won the next game to 15, so she equalized.
At the beginning of the final set Timi missed a great opportunity. Firstly, she lost her service game from 40-30, then she couldn’t broke her rival after 0-40. But she didn’t give up! She equalized to 2:2, but then Oprandi again broke her.
After that Timi came back, and won two games in a row. Oprandi again equalized, but after 4:4 Timi was the better. She hold her next service game and broke the rival to 15, she advanced to the second round.
Timi’s next opponent will be the 80th ranked Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. The 32-year old Croatian player’s best position was 32 (11 May 1998). At the beginning of her professional career she has achieved huge success: in 1997 and 1998 she won the tournament in Bol, she played in the semifinal at Wimbledon in 1999. In 1998 she won the doubles with Martina Hingis at the Australian Open.
At the beginning of the 2000s her career was ruined by personal and financial problems, in the mid-2000s she hardly played a tournament. At the end of the decade she returned to the WTA Tour.
Few weeks ago Lucic-Baroni won against the World No 2 Simona Halep at the US Open (7:6, 6:2).
