Sensation in Sydney: Timi and Lucie are the new Champions

10/01/2014 – The Hungarian-Czech pair won against the World No 1 duo of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci :))

Timea Babos, Lucie Safarova (Hungarian, Czech)-Sara Errani, Roberta Vinci (Italian, 1) 7:5, 3:6, 10-7

“Today is a very big win! 2/2 my balance against world leaders in WTA finals : D ! Jokes aside, I’m incredibly happy with my performance this week. We had a good understanding with each other and enjoyed the game. But at the same time we also fought very hardly: I’m waiting for the Australian Open next week” – said Timi extremely happy after the final .

“I am very happy with this tournament. Timi came to Sydney with stomach problems and without practice, but as soon as she started to feel better we started to spend on average 5 hours per day training trying to raise the level. This final proved that hard practice pays off. Similar as in the semi-finals Timi was the best when it was the most important. She raised her level to on 5-5. And didn’t make any mistakes in following 2 games. Also in a tiebreaker she played unbelievable points including great point at 5-5 where she made around 10 full-power shots in a raw and Lucien finishing it with a winner. Also at 9-6 she made two 190km/h serves. For me this is what champions do – they come up with the shots when it matters! It was very exciting to watch Timi and Lucie smiling the whole match and at the end the whole stadium was cheering for them. It was a great moment and I am very proud of Timi how she handled herself on the court. We are going to Melbourne right away. There is no rest or time to enjoy the win, but I am sure beating #1 in the world will be a great stimulate for the challenges that only Grand Slams can bring.”

“Every game we played well this week. That was the key to enjoying a joint appearance, whether it’s good fun. Today’s last match was amazing ! We’ll see when we can be together again. It is clear that we love to play together , but now we both have a constant partner” – quoted the WTA Tour ( ) site Safarova’s words after the final.

Of course the Italians were the favourite’s in the Sydney final. But the Hungarian and Czech player played very well, they absolutely no care with the chances!

Timi and her partner opened the final with a break, they lived with the fourt opportunity. Unfortunately, after that the Italians gained momentum , they passed 3:1 and served . But the opponents break back, and at 4:3 Safarova hold her service game from 0-40! At 5:5 Timi and her partner broke the rival to 40, then won to 40 the next game, closed the 46 -minute first set.

Errani and Vinci started very well the 25 -minute second set. They broke Timi, then pulled away 3:0. Then everyone hold their serves, the Hungarian and the Czech player had no chance to fight back.

Come the all-important Champions Tie-break. It was a real crime! In the beginning it did not seem to be a sensation, the Italians led 3-0 with a minibreak. But then came the sensation. Timi and Lucie Safarova equalizing, but after that the first seeds had a 5-3 lead.

However Timi and her partner again took the initiative won numerous points as a receiver. Soon became 5-5 and the Hungarian-Czech duo led 7-5, 8-6 and 9-6! Errani and Vinci saved the first match point, but after Tmi’s big serve Safarova ended the final with az effective smash!
