Magnificent victory in Monterrey

04/04/2013 – The defending champion Timea Babos reached the quarter-final of the Monterrey Open, after defeating in three-set meeting the former World Number One Ana Ivanovic.

The meeting lasted 1 hour 49 minutes.

Timea Babos (Hungarian)-Ana Ivanovic (Serbia, 4), 7:5, 3:6, 6:2

“It was great to be back on the Centre Court! In the beginning the crowd cheering for Ana, but slowly they changed, stood beside me. In the third set, at 4:2, 40-40 we had at least a one minute break. The fans are just encouraged us so much, I feel I played and served well, but my performance was not as good as last year. There is absolutely no confusion that we had entered the field so late, but rather threw me in the mood. Although we expected a lot because it was a long match ahead of us. I love playing in front of so many people! Many people coming for such a meeting in the evening hours, “– said Timi.

“Despite the weaker performance in recent months we worked consistently! We tried to take advantage of the great venues and professional opportunities. Finally we managed to put together each mosaic pieces. In today’s match Timi had a better baseline game and return with the usually good serve. With this type of game become much more aggressive and offensive! Finally, as a biggest surprise of 3000 spectators Timi won first time against a top20 player and by the way the audience’s sympathy is won. She will need it again in the quarterfinal against Niculescu”- said Timi’s coach, Levente Barátosi.

The Monterrey title holder expected a very difficult task against the World number17 Ana Ivanovic. The 25-year-old Serbian is a wild card player in Mexico, in the opening round she won 6:0, 6:0 against Russian Marta Sirotkina.

Ivanovic nearly ten years ago began professional career, at 11 WTA singles tournament was the best. Five years ago, triumphed at Roland Garros, in the final surpassed Dinara Safina (6:4, 6:3). Before that she was already at two Grand Slam finals, but lost in 2007 in Paris against Justine Henin  (6:1, 6:2), and defeated in 2008 at the Australian Open by Maria Sharapova (7:5, 6:3).

In 9th of June 2008 Ivanovic took the lead at the world rankings, she had the first place for 12 weeks in two “stages”. This season she was at the last 16 at the Australian Open and in Doha, Dubai and Miami.

In Monterrey Timi started superbly, she led 3:1 and 4:2 in the opening set. Ivanovic was then “collected” herself and won three games in row, seemed to keep the game under control.

However, the 19-year-old Hungarian tennis player played again at high standards! At first she equalized and then again at 5:5 broke the rival. In fact, Timi won the next game, and took the first set in 46 minutes. She struck six aces in the opening act, had two double faults, she had 79 percent behind first serve, while after the second serve 40 percent.

However, the second set was dominated by the Serbian star. Ivanovic twice won the title holder’s service game and pulled away 4:0. Timi – somewhat unexpectedly – broke to 30 then came up to 4.2. But the former world number one equalized in 30 minutes.

At the beginning of the third set Ivanovic again broke her opponent, after Timi twice had the ball for 1:0. In the next game the Serbian player won her service game to 30, led 2:0, but Timi fought back! She relatively broke Ivanovic and equalized (2:2).

The sequel was even more amazing! Timi was completely unnerving the former world number one, won point after point! At 4:2 the young Hungarian hold her serve after 40-40, and at 5:2 broke again Ivanovic from 0-30! So Timi got into the quarter-final.

In the last 8 Timi will play against Monica Niculescu.
