Timi knocks out Niculescu

11/02/2016 – The Hungarian player won in 2 hours and 19 minutes against the 9th seed Monica Niculescu.

“I’m very glad that first time I got to the quarter-final of a Premier tournament in singles. I feel, that it was a high-quality match. My game plan went well. In the first set I started very well, but unfortunately I bit back … For this reason I lost the opening set. But after that I was able to play more aggressive, so I came back and won the match. Today my serves were not as good, as before, but I played well from the baseline. I’m really happy !!! “– Timi said.


Timi started well, although she couldn’t lived with four break points in the second game. But after that, she won her opponent’s service game, then she led 4:1. But came the turnaround…


Niculescu was the more accurate, she won five games in a row. She broke the Hungarian player twice, both times to 15.


The first part of the 36-minute second set was similar to the opening act. Timi jumped to a 4:1 lead, but after that, she broke Niculescu again! At 5:1 she hold her service game to 30.


The final act was extremely eventful! Timi led twice with a break, but both times Niculescu quickly equalized …


After 3:3 the Hungarian youngster broke her opponent to 40, then she hold the next service game from 15-30. She strengthened her lead (5:3).


In the last game, Niculescu saved the first match point, but the second was crucial. Timi got into the quarter-final!


The Hungarian player’s next opponent will be the second seed Roberta Vinci. Last year the 32-year old Italian star reached the final of the US Open after beating the World No1 Serena Williams. Vinci is ranked 16th, her career best was 11 (June 10, 2013). So far, she has won 9 WTA and 9 ITF event in singles.


Timi already played four times against Vinci, who led 3-1.
