Fantastic start in Linz

09/10/2018 – (Photo: Péter Zádor/MTSZ) Timi lost a total of two games against the top40 opponent.

UPPER AUSTRIA LADIES LINZ (250 000 USD, INDOOR), SINGLES, ROUND 1
Tímea Babos (Hungarian)-Donna Vekić (Croatian, 8) 6:1, 6:1

The match lasted 1 hour 8 minutes in Linz.

“Obviously, I am very happy with the victory, as the game went very well. It is not easy to play the first match against such a good opponent. The point is, I did it! It’s obvious: I’m happy” – said Timi.

Timi played the first match of a new era, and the event was even more special because new coach Nick Horvat recently managed the work of the current opponent, Donna Vekić. Timi made sure the meeting was really memorable.

In the 33-minute opening act, the Croatian player won the opening game, and this was the last time, that she led. Timi saved a break point in the next game, then won her opponent’s serve three times, three times to 30. Meanwhile, the Hungarian player hold her own game to 30 and to 40.

In the second act, Timi also made a good start. In the second game she broke the Croatian star again to 30, then came a very amazing stage. Vekić, who wanted to live with the last chance for a comeback, led 40-0, and had a total of eight (!!!) break points. But Timi had equalized, fought a giant and took advantage of her first advantage, so she led 3:0.

After that, the Hungarian player broke the rival, this time to 50, then hold her serve to 0 (6:1, 5:0). Vekić then won a game, then saved two match points. Timi finally took advantage of the third opportunity and closed the meeting.

The next opponent of the Hungarian player is the permanent doubles partner, Kristina Mladenovic.

The French player (born: 14 May, 1993) is currently 48th, and her career best position was 10th (23 October, 2017). Kristina Mladenovic has so far won 1 WTA Tour, 1 WTA125s and 4 ITF tournaments in singles. She was quarter-finalist at the US Open in 2015, and at the Roland Garros in 2017.

Mladenovic reached the final this year in St. Petersburg (Russia, 799 000 USD, indoor), then played in the QF in Acapulco (Mexico, 250 000 USD, clay). Since the beginning of March, she had no outstanding achievement in singles.

The two players have met eight times so far between the pros: the result is 4-4. This year in San Jose Timi won 6:4, 6:2.
