08/01/2018 – The 5th seed Lesia Tsurenko won in two sets.

HOBART INTERNATIONAL (250 000 USD, HARD COURT), SINGLES, ROUND 1
Lesia Tsurenko (Ukrainian, 5)-Tímea Babos (Hungarian) 7:6 (7-2), 6:2

The match lasted 1 hour 44 minutes in Hobart.

The Hungarian player started well in Australia: she broke Tsurenko to 30 in the opening game of the first set. Unfortunately after 2:1, Timi lost her serve to 15, then struggled in the next own games. She saved the sixth game after 30-40, then hold the eight game from two break points.

In the meantime, Tsurenko was confident behind the serves. Later it was key in the tie-break. The 5th seed jumped to a 5-0 lead, and closed the set easily.

At the beginning of the second set, Timi could still come back twice from a break down, but had no chance in the later stage. After 2:2, Tsurenko broke her opponent to 40, then saved a break point. In the seventh game, the Hungarian player could not hold her serve after 40-40, and it was decisive. In the next game, Tsurenko won her serve to 15, and advanced to the second round.

Timi’s next tournament will be the Australian Open.
