03/04/2012 – Tímea Babos tennis player won the poll by SamsungSport.hu, which decided about the best Hungarian Athlete of February.
Samsungsport.hu in 2011, organized the first “Athlete of the Year” election, in which the website together with the readers tried to find the best athlete from the best performances in the year 2011. The poll was won by swimmer Dániel Gyurta, whom we gratefully congratulate!
Then, in January Gábor Császár won the poll for Athlete of the Month. In February the nominees were: Anita Görbicz, leader of Győri ETO KC, the handball team, which marching in Champions League and Ákos Horváth, player of basketball team Szolnok, which reach the final 8 (now the final 4) in Euro Challenge Cup.
But the winner is Tímea Babos, who won the 220 000 USD Monterrey tournament. This was the 16th success of a Hungarian player in WTA Tour. She is in the top70 in WTA ranking and she is the youngest player in this level. The award ceremony was at the Park Tennis Club, where the young player has free training opportunities, and other assistance.
“I am very happy with this, because this is not a professionals prize but the fan’s – said Tímea Babos. – I just begin to realize, that now more and more people are at home is considered a big deal that I got in among the top70, so far, I felt it rather provoked recognition abroad. I must deal with this sort of popularity, but I thank this to fans. Now I’m preparing for my first senior Grand Slam, the big goal is to win one or two matches. The Olympics is still there, I must improve 10-12 places to gain enough ranking points to get started.”
Father, Csaba Babos, said he had always trusted in her.
“For months she showed a game that we knew, it’s only a matter of time before such an outstanding result will come – said Csaba Babos. – The financial conditions are now provided, so you can continue to develop at this rate. There are also new sponsors, and it is certain that this year has it all, and this year we’ll have enough financial backing.”
