AO 2020: Timi and Kiki reach the final, for the 3rd time

29/01/2020 – The Hungarian-French pair broke the opponent a total of three times.

The match lasted 1 hour and 26 minutes in Melbourne.


“We didn’t play our best tennis in the first set, I have to admit it. But we struggled very much to find a solution. We were constantly helping each other, and overall we were performing well. We are very happy to be the finalists again.” – said Timi.



“We had several very long games. They’re such a tough team…but I’m just super happy that we’re into out third consecutive final here in Melbourne. We definitely love it,” Mladenovic said in the pair’s on-court interview. “We had that privilege to hold the trophy two years ago. It doesn’t feel very old, so we will really give our best to try to repeat the story and have this beautiful trophy in our hands.”


In the 45-minute first set, the Taiwanese pair led all the way to 5:4, then the opponent brought their serve to 0. And that’s when the semifinal changed! Timi and Kiki pulled to in 40-15 as receivers and then used the third break ball after an equal. The French player then finished the opening act to 30.


The second set was is smoother. The Taiwanese double saved their first own game from 0-40, but after 1:1, the opponent lost only two rally.


Timi and Kristina Mladenovic played decisively, bravely and accurately and after 3:1 decided the match. In a quarter-hour game, they had a total of seven break point and they lived with the last chance!


Timi and Kiki brought their next serve to 30, then lost only one rally after 5:2.


In the Melbourne final, the Hungarian-French double’s opponent will be Su-Wei Hsieh and Barbora Strýcová.


The Taiwanese player (born: 4 January, 1986) is 3rd in the World Rankings, has a career best position of 1 (12 May, 2012). So far she has won 25 WTA Tour, 1 WTA125s and 23 ITF events in doubles. She remained unbeaten with Shuai Peng (China) at Wimbledon and at the WTA Finals in 2013 and at the Roland Garros in 2014. In 2019, she won against at Wimbledon with her current partner.


The Czech player (born: 28 March, 1986) is 1st at the World Rankings. Strýcová has so far won 28 WTA Tour and 10 ITF tournaments in this genre, having been at least int he semifinal in all Grand Slam tournaments.


Last year in the Wimbledon semifinal, the Taiwanese-Czech pair won 7:6 (5), 6:4 against Timi and Kiki. At the final of the WTA Finals in Shenzhen the Hungarian-French pair triumphed 6:1, 6:3.
