AO 2017: a new opponent for doubles, match on Thursday

18/01/2017 – The Hungarian-Russian pair will meet the duo of Sorana Cirstea and Carina Witthoeft.

On Wednesday the Doubles Draw was modified at the Australian Open, which turn has affected Timi and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

The last week’s Sydney tournament winner Hungarian-Russian duo originally had to clash with the 15th seed, 14-times Grand Slam winner Serena Williams and Venus Williams. But shortly before the start of match the US-pair withdrew from the Australian Grand Slam competition. At the beginning of Wednesday’s program Venus Williams won in singles against the Swiss Stefanie Vögele, 6: 3, 6: 2. But after that she claimed, that she had a minor elbow injury, which caused the change of the draw in doubles.

So Timi and Pavlyuchenkova on Thursday will meet Sorana Cirstea and Carina Witthoeft.

The 26-year old Romanian player is currently not ranked in doubles by the WTA, her career best position was 35 (9 March 2009). So far, Cirstea has won 4 WTA and 9 ITF tournament in doubles.

The 21-year old German player is currently only ranked 709th. Her career best position was 303 (February 29 2016). So far, she won 1 ITF tournament in this genre.
