After a good start, defeat in Doha

13/02/2018 – After winning the first set, Timi won two games.

Elise Mertens (Belgian, 15)-Tímea Babos (Hungarian) 2:6, 6:1, 6:1

The match lasted 1 hour 40 minutes in Doha.

“It’s a pity for today’s match! I started well, but Mertens made a lot of mistakes. At the beginning of the second set I had the chances, but I could not live with them. And then I started making more and more mistakes, and she gradually improved. I think, the match was decided at the beginning of the second set. I’m sorry, because I had chances, but I did not live with them. Maybe I was not brave enough and I did not adjust well to the situation. But I had a top20 opponent. I must learn from this and move forward. On Wednesday I will have work-outs, the came the doubles and next week the Hungarian Ladies Open” – said Timi.

The opening act of the match was excellent: Timi dominated the game. In the first 33-minute set she saved her serve after 1:1 from 15-40, then jumped to a 5:1 lead. The Hungarian player broke her opponent to 0, then to 40. In the seventh game the Australian Open semifinalist lost only two rallies as a receiver, but this was only a short improvement.

In the next game, Timi broke to 0, closing the opening act.

Unfortunately, the sequel has brought a big turn. At the start of the 37-minute second set, Mertens won her opponent’s serve to 40 after 1:1, then saved two break points. The Hungarian player was unable to regain control, and in the next two own games she won only two rallies.

The decisive set was also one-sided… Mertens was more confident and accurate. In the opening game she saved three break points, and after 1: 1 she did not give a chance to her opponent. The Belgian player broke to 30, after 2:1, then to 15, after 4:1. Mertens won the last game to 0.
