Acapulco: victory in singles from a set down

27/02/2019 – Timi led with a break int he first act, then came back from 2:4 in the final set.

The match lasted 2 hours 31 minutes in Acapulco.


“It was a great match! It was long at needed a lot of energy. I am aware that I’m not in top form, but I struggled as a I could, I tried to play smartly. I served well, I moved a lot. Of course the victory is the most important now, I am very happy about it! It is interesting that the matches start late in Acapulco, which also determines things out of the way. We schedule everything a little later than usual. But I enjoy the conditions here, as We compete in a great place. I’m glad to win so it was a super day!” – Timi said.


In the 51-minute first set, Timi won her opponent’s game to 40 after 1:1, but unfortunately she lost that lead from 40-30, immediately. In the eighth game, the Hungarian player saved her serve from 0-40, and had two chances for the tie-break at 5:6. But Jakupović saved both of them, then used her first set point.


The 46-minute second act brought a big battle, with a single break. Timi won the Slovenian player’s serve to 40 after 2:2, and retained that advantage. In the seventh game, Jakupović saved two break points, but there was no chance of a turn around.


At 5:4, the 25-year old Hungarian player won her own game from 30-30.


At the beginning of the third act, both players broke. Timi won her opponent’s serve after 2:4 and 4:4. In the ninth game, the Hungarian player used her fifth chance in a huge battle after 0-40. This has been a decisive one. Timi fought with a huge heart and determination, lost only one rally after 5:4, and she got into the second round.


Timi’s opponent in the last 16 will be Saisai Zheng. The Chinese player (born: 5 February, 1994) is 40th in the World Ranking, has a career best position of 38th (31 December, 2018). Zheng has won 2WTA125s and 11 ITF tournaments in singles. Her best result of this year was the quarter-final in Hua Hin (Thailand, 250 000 USD, hard court). At the first Grand Slam of the year, at the Australian Open in Melbourne,she lost  in the first round 6:2, 6:3 against Garbiñe Muguruza (Spain).


Timi and Zheng have met each other once among at the WTA Tour: in 2014, the Chinese player won at the Tianjin Open, 7:5, 6:4.
