2016: this was the season in singles

07/11/2016 – Timi finished the year at the WTA Elite Trophy, her season was full on successes and career best position.

 

Due to last November’s tournament victory in Taipei, the Hungarian player began the 2016 season at the 70th position. After the opening event and the semifinal in Shenzhen, she equaled her career best (World No59), then she improved her CH a total of six times. Now, her career best is No25, she finished the year at the 26th position.

JANUARY:

 

The Hungarian player began the year very well in Shenzhen! In the second round she defeated (6:1, 6:4) Monica Niculescu , who won the previous three meetings. In the last eight Timi won 6:4, 6:4 against Eugenie Bouchard, the 2014 Wimbledon finalist.

Then in the semifinal, Alison Riske (USA) ended the Hungarian youngsters march.

 

At the opening round of the Australian Open, Timi won a huge battle (6:7, 7:5, 7:5) against Heather Watson, and ended the bad series in Melbourne. The Hungarian player had several times came close to success in the Australian Grand Slam tournament, but could not win a match at the main draw till 2016. In the second round she lost smoothly against Belinda Bencic, but a few months later, she “revenged”.

 FEBRUARY:

 

Another important success: Timi was quarter-finalist at the Premier tournament at St. Petersburg (Russia). In the second round the Hungarian player again defeated Niculescu and was very close to get to the semifinal. But unfortunately, Roberta Vinci won the three sets battle, after Timi served for the victory.

 

After the Russian tournament, the Hungarian youngster reached the third round in Doha. In the second round, Timi won 6:4, 6:1 against the World No17, and former Roland Garros finalist Sara Errani. In the next round, Garbine Muguruza was the final “destination”.

 MARCH:

 

Difficult start of this month: Timi dropped out in the first round at Monterrey. However, the Miami Open has been great!

The Hungarian player easily passed the more experienced Anna Tatishvili, then came the World No14 and few months later US Open finalist, Karolina Pliskova. Timi won in great style, winning the third sets tie-break to 7-0 against the Czech star.

In the next round the Japanese Naomi Osaka could not stop the Hungarian player, then came the Australian Open champion – few months later US Open champ and World No1 – Angelique Kerber. The German player won 6:2, 3:6, 6:4, came back from a break down in the final set.

APRIL:

 

After the Overseas hard courts, earlier this month Timi even the tiredness, got tot the last eight in Katowice in indoor arpet. After that, she won a match in Stuttgart. Then came Rabat, and the first outdoor clay court event of the season. A year ago, the Hungarian youngster was a finalist in Morocco (Marrakech), this season she got to the semifinal, where she lost 6:4, 7:5 against Tímea Bacsinszky.

MAY:

 

In Madrid, the local hero Carla Suarez-Navarro defeated Timi in the first round Timi. Then, the Hungarian youngster celebrated two great successes in Rome. Kiki Bertens (from the Netherlands) was “only” World No86 by that time, but soon she has been semifinalist at the Roland Garros. Timi won 6:1, 6:4, then defeated the former World No1, Venus Williams, 6:7, 7:5, 6:4.

 

Then in the next round Madison Keys (USA) won against the Hungarian player, who reached then the second round in Strasbourg and at the Roland Garros.

JUNE-JULY:

 

The two summer months were quieter in terms of the Singles. Timi lost in the opening round in Birmingham and Montreal, while she reached the second round in Eastbourne and Wimbledon. The overall picture has improved so significantly with the fact, that the Hungarian youngster reached the final for the second time in Ladies’ Doubles at the English Grand Slam event.

AUGUST:

 

The most successful month in singles! In Florianopolis Timi celebrated four wins in singles and reached the third career final at the WTA Tour. In the quarter-final she defeated the World No41 Jelena Ostapenko and had a very good chance in the last match, in the final. The Hungarian player led with a break in the third set, but later the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu won the tournament in Brazil with a 2:6, 6:4, 6:3 victory.

 

At the Rio Olympics the two time Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova has not given a chance. Later, the Czech star won the Bronze Medal.

 

Then Timi played very well in Cincinnati. The Hungarian player celebrated two victories in the qualifying, then won also against Louisa Chirico and Belinda Bencic. Then came an unforgettable match and the great success at the last 16! Timi’s opponent was the later WTA Finals winner, the World No11 Dominika Cibulkova. After losing the opening round, the Hungarian player showed a great character and finally won 4:6, 6:3, 6:1.

 

The next round was the last one for Timi, against Garbine Muguruza.

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER:

 

At the beginning of the first autumn month, Timi was close, was very close to another milestone in her career … The Hungarian player got into the third round at the US Open – first time in singles at a Grand Slam tournament – and had a great battle against the World No5 Simona Halep. The Romanian star smoothly won the first set, but then came the big turnaround. Timi equalized with 6: 2, and led with a break in the final act. At the end part of the set, after 4:4 Halep won two games, after her opponent led 40-15…

 

After the US Open was a short rest, then came three events in China. Only with one victory…

 

But in Moscow, at indoor Timi again played very well. She won a huge match in three sets against Irina-Camelia Begu, then defeated easily her former doubles partner, Kristina Mladenovic.

 

In the quarter-final, the Hungarian player had another thriller, this time against the defending champion and first seed Svetlana Kuznetsova. It was one sets each, when at 3:2 Timi got an injury break, because of a thigh problem. She came back on the court, but lost in tears, 7:5, 6:7, 6:2.

NOVEMBER:

 

After Carla Suarez-Navarro withdraws on day before the first match, Timi got to the WTA Elite Trophy. In Zhuhai, the Hngarian player was very tired and had a thigh injury, so she lost against Tímea Bacsinszky and Zhang Shuai. But Timi had good moments, and she was not sad after her last tournament of the season, which was full of successes and happy memories.
